Test Your Smoke Alarms Today – #testittuesday

In recent months, Fire and Rescue Services from across the country have been sending out timely reminders on social networking sites asking members of the public to test their smoke alarms every Tuesday.

#testittuesday is the Twitter hashtag for the campaign and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service will now be sending out a reminder as well, using the Service’s new Facebook and Twitter accounts. In the next few days, the Service will be updating these accounts to send out more information about the SAFER day which is on Saturday 21st January. Once this campaign is over, both accounts will be updated regularly with news about other campaigns and incidents in Lancashire.

The SAFER day will see every fire station in Lancashire opening its doors to the public who can visit the station and talk to firefighters and community fire safety practitioners about fire safety and pick up a free smoke alarms as well.

Many fire related deaths are caused by people being overcome by smoke and fumes, not just burns. Therefore, a working smoke alarm is essential. It provides a vital early warning and extra time to escape if there is a fire. Every home should have at least one working smoke alarm.

If you have smoke alarm that has previously been fitted by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and it doesn’t work when you test it, ring the Service immediately on 0800 1691125 and a replacement smoke alarm will be arranged. If you have bought a smoke alarm from a supplier and it does not work, replace batteries or arrange for a new alarm to be installed as soon as possible.
