Three fire engines were called out to a house fire on Cliff Street, Rishton at 3:59am on Boxing Day where unfortunately an elderly lady died.

When the three crews from Hyndburn Fire Station arrived at the scene, they were met with smoke issuing

from the upstairs and downstairs windows. Teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered in to the property and rescued an adult male from the first floor and an elderly lady from the ground floor. Firefighters continued to use breathing apparatus to search the house and extinguish the flames.

In total, six teams of breathing apparatus wearers were used in conjunction with a hose reel and a positive ventilation unit. Three people were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and yesterday evening the lady passed away.

Group Manager Ben Norman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said:

“Our thoughts at this time are with the lady’s family and we have seen this happen too many times during a period which is supposed to bring joy and happiness. In the last two months we have seen four elderly people die in house fires and we urge families and friends to check on the wellbeing of elderly people. In this incident the property did have a working smoke alarm; unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to help save this lady’s life. A joint police and fire investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fire.”Rich Text AreaToolbarBold (Ctrl + B)Italic (Ctrl + I)Strikethrough (Alt + Shift + D)UnderlineUnordered list (Alt + Shift + U)Ordered list (Alt + Shift + O)OutdentIndentAlign Left (Alt + Shift + L)Align Center (Alt + Shift + C)Align Right (Alt + Shift + R)Insert/edit linkUnlink (Alt + Shift + S)Insert/edit imageEdit CSS StyleInsert More Tag (Alt + Shift + T)Insert Page break (Alt + Shift + P)Toggle spellchecker (Alt + Shift + N)▼
