You cannot smell or taste carbon monoxide but poisoning can be fatal. Symptoms include headache, drowsiness and flu-like symptoms.
Leaks from faulty gas fires, water heaters or boilers are usually the cause.
- Make sure gas fires, water heaters or boilers are fitted properly by experts.
- Get them checked once a year.
- Install a carbon monoxide alarm – available from any DIY shop.
- If you think you have a leak, open all doors and windows; turn off the gas at the mains; don’t switch lights on or off; leave the property; call Transco on 0800 111 999.
