The Childsafe programme for Year 2 children is an educational package that has been designed to help and advise children and their families by:
- increasing their knowledge about the risk that fire presents – particular focus is placed upon the dangers associated with matches and lighters
- generating awareness of the actions to be taken in the event of a fire.
In Year 6 it reinforces these messages but also highlights the consequences of making hoax calls and deliberate fire-setting.
Childsafe is mainly delivered by operational crews though where geographical distance could affect operational response time Community Fire Safety (CFS) Practitioners deliver these sessions.
Curriculum and Home Links
Childsafe contributes to the overall delivery of a planned school Safety Education programme. By raising the awareness of the pupils in terms of what action needs to be taken in the event of fire it not only promotes safety conscious behaviours, but also enables even young children to look out for risk factors. By asking them to take that message home it has a wider impact on families and the community as a whole.
