For Year 6 children the Childsafe lesson reinforces the messages from Year 2 but goes into more depth and also focuses upon the consequences of anti-social behaviour linked to fire – specifically arson and making hoax calls. The session usually lasts one hour.
The session covers
- Role of the Fire and Rescue Service
- How quickly fire spreads – done through film “Bedroom Fire” or “Front Room Fire”
- What to do in the event of a fire and the importance of having a working smoke alarm
- Revision of Escape Action or Fire Plans and what to do in the event of clothes catching fire using the “Stop, Drop and Roll” technique
- The Fire and Rescue Service in their local area and response times
- The possible consequences of deliberate fire setting (arson) and making hoax calls – done through the film of “Jason’s Story”
After the session
At the end of the session each Year 6 class teacher will be given –
- a copy of the booklet ‘For Pete’s Sake Jake!’ – the central character introduces the more serious issues of hoax calls and the consequences of deliberate fire setting and anti-social behaviour (it will be pointed out to this age group that 10 years old is the age of criminal responsibility – a fact that they may not be aware of). A copy of this booklet should also be sent to the school at the time of booking. The booklet can be photocopied for each child to allow for pre or post-session activities.
- a Fire Safety Visual Poster – this can be used as the starting point in class for a range of follow-up activities, particularly in Literacy.
At the end of the session each Year 6 child will be left with to take home –
- a “Childsafe … in the Home” DVD pack – this is an interactive DVD package which reinforces and builds upon the session. Designed as a homework tool the aim is to spread the fire safety messages to the pupils’ immediate and extended families. The accompanying booklet also contains a risk assessment checklist which earns the children a fire safety task certificate once completed and returned to school.
- a Childsafe KS 2 Factsheet – this explains to parents what the session was about and gives a range of practical fire safety advice
- a Home Fire Safety Check Leaflet or Multilingual equivalent
