Fire Certificates
Do I need to apply for a fire certificate?
Fire certificates no longer have any legal standing as they were abolished by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. You may wish, however, to use your fire certificate as the basis of your Fire Risk Assessment.
Below is some general information about fire certificates:
Fire certificates were issued under the Fire Precautions Act 1971. In addition to the risk assessment for a workplace, they set out the fire precautionary arrangements of the building
Fire certificates were issued to premises, as listed below:
- A hotel or boarding house which provided sleeping accommodation for more than six people (guests or staff), or if any part of the accommodation was elsewhere than the ground floor
- A factory, office, shop or railway premises where more than 20 people worked at any one time, or more than 10 people worked anywhere other than the ground floor
- A factory where explosive or highly flammable materials were used or stored
