If you use oxygen therapy at home you may need to take some additional fire safety precautions. This is because oxygen makes a fire burn more strongly.
If you need to use oxygen therapy at home contact 0800 169 1125 to register your with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. This means that if you do have an emergency fire crews will know about the extra risk at your property.
- Never smoke or let anyone smoke near you.
- Do not oil the taps or valves.
- Don’t use Vaseline or oil-based creams or gels on your skin as when it mixes with oxygen it creates a flammable mixture.
- Keep oxygen away from candles, open fires and gas cookers. (safe distances are 3 metres from an open fire and 1.5 metres from a closed fire).
- Keep the tubes free. Trapped tubes stop the air flow. Loose tubes cause falls and leaks.
- Turn off when not in use.
