As teachers know their class or group best; what their abilities are, how much they can take in over a given period of time and what activities are most suitable to their circumstances the most appropriate approach is that they look through the Toolkit catalogue and choose activities that they feel would be most suitable for their students. Most of the activities last around 15 minutes so an hour session could include 3 activities and an evaluation of the learning. However, it might be felt that one activity is sufficient for the session or that the activities should be spread over different periods of time to include suitable breaks for consolidation of learning.
Close liaison between the teacher and Fire and Rescue Service personnel will allow a decision to be made as to what format and content allows the most appropriate and effective way of the conveying the Fire Safety messages to the learners. It is important that the audience’s needs are understood and that, where appropriate, the Setting take the lead in decisions. It is recommended that a meeting take place to decide upon the best approach prior to the actual sessions taking place.
The Toolkit has 27 activities which are grouped under the following themes -
-
Concept of Fire
-
Fire Hazards
-
Smoke Alarms
-
Escaping from Fire
-
Calling the Fire Service
-
What to do if your clothes catch on fire
-

-

Each session also has an evaluation process.
