Smoke alarms save lives. It is important to ensure that you have smoke alarms fitted in your property. You should have a smoke alarm fitted on each level of your property like the hallway and landing however it is a good idea to also fit them in any room where a fire can start. For example, any room where you smoke or leave appliances plugged in. Smoke alarms are not however a good idea in the kitchen however heat alarms are available.

You can either have a battery smoke alarm or a mains-powered smoke alarm. If you choose to have a mains-powered alarm, make sure it’s installed by a qualified electrician. A mains-powered smoke alarm will still have a battery inside so if it starts beeping this may need changing or the alarm be checked by a qualified electrician.

Make sure any alarms you buy are marked with a current British Standards or European (CE) safety mark, which shows they are approved and safe. Follow the instructions that come with the alarm when it comes to installation as they all work in different ways.
