History
The earliest record of an organised Fire Brigade in the town of Skelmersdale was at the turn of the century. However, when as a town Skelmersdale passed through a period of decline the Fire Brigade ceased to exist as such.

Following the 1939-45 war Lancashire County Fire Brigade came into being as a result of the 1947 Fire Services Act. From this time, the town of Skelmersdale received its fire cover from Ormskirk Fire Station, a situation that continued until 1965.

The fire station for Skelmersdale New Town was sited in the old egg-packing station on Wigan Road where the premises were shared with an engineering firm. This situation lasted until 26 April 1971, the date on which the present fire station in Tanhouse Road was opened by Lord Cozens Hardy OBE D.L.

This building was built in 1970 and is home to the following appliances: -

1 x whole time pump
1 x retained pump
1 x reserve pump
Facilities
Disabled parking, disabled toilets and male and female toilets and showers
