The Youth Engagement Scheme (YES) helps young adults between 11 and 17 year olds to build self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as teaching them to respect themselves and others.
The programme covers a wide range of topics including how to stay safe, not just from the obvious hazards, but in relationships too, and it promotes young people to become as fit as an Olympic athlete, both physically and mentally. Finally, there will be chances for the young people to practise the skills that firefighters need, such as climbing ladders and using fire hoses.
The programme is open to young people aged 11-17, engaged in or at risk of getting involved in anti-social behaviour or criminal activity, or who have low esteem or are falling short of achieving their full potential
YES is a proven success. We’re happy to run through the statistical evidence with you, but here are the comments of young people who’ve been on the scheme and those of accompanying teaching staff:
- “I loved most of the sessions”
- “The uniform was great”
- “I got fitter by the end of the course”
- “Using the equipment was exciting”
- “I feel more confident now”
- “I get on better with others”
- “One of the young people had not worked in a group situation for three years”
- “I have a better relationship in school now with the young people”
- “One of the group had not been in school for two years. For him to have 100% attendance is excellent”
What it costs
£2,500 for up to 10 young people. If you know of young people who would benefit, we’re keen to hear from you.
