UPDATE 18:00 – Firefighting is ongoing at this incident with assistance from a stinger appliance and the air support unit. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus are using multiple hose reels, jets and a ventilation fan to tackle the fire. The smoke plume has reduced now however we’re still advising locals nearby to keep windows and doors closed at this time.

Firefighters from Darwen were called to reports of a fire involving a commercial premises on Kay Street, Darwen. On arrival they found the fire involved a multi-occupancy building which was well alight and smoke logged. Four firefighters began tackling the fire using breathing apparatus, hose reels and a ventilation unit. The building is approximately 75m by 30m and two storey’s.
The incident response was quickly scaled up to 10 fire engines and an aerial ladder platform. Due to a large smoke plume in the area any residents living locally that are being affected by the smoke are advised to close their windows and doors as a precaution.
