Vehicle fire on M6 Southbound

At 05:57 on the 29th July 2022, six fire engines from Preston, Fulwood, Penwortham, South Shore and Blackpool attended a vehicle fire on the M6 Southbound between junction 32and 31.

The incident involved a HGV vehicle which was well alight when crews arrived.

Firefighting operations are underway. Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used a one hose reel jet and two hose reel to extinguish the fire.


Update at 11:45am: This incident has now been reduced to two fire engines with firefighters working to make the scene safe and monitoring hot spots.

Lane 4 is now open on the M6 south between J32 and J31A. Lanes 1,2 and 3 remain closed. Please allow extra time if travelling in the area as long delays remain.


Update 14:30: Lancashire Fire and Rescue crews were in attendance for several hours and were part of a complex recovery operation. This incident has now been handed over to the National Highways.

We would still advise the public to check travel routes and timings as delays still remain in parts of the M6.
