Fireworks, bonfires and sparklers are fun but they can also be dangerous.

Follow these simple steps to keep everyone safe at any celebration.

Fireworks: The Safety Code

Buy smart

  • Only adults (18+) can buy fireworks.

  • Look for the CE mark and buy from trusted shops.

Light safe

  • Read and follow the instructions.

  • Use a taper — never hold fireworks in your hand.

  • Stand well back. Never go back to a firework once lit.

  • Tell your neighbours. Keep children supervised and pets indoors.

Bonfires: Think Twice

Public displays are safest — but if you do build one:

  • Tell your neighbours first.

  • Keep well away from fences, sheds, and trees.

  • Check for children or animals before lighting.

  • Use a barrier and keep people 5 metres back.

  • Never use petrol or paraffin.

  • Only burn clean, dry wood.

  • Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.

  • If it gets out of control, call 999 immediately.

Disposing of fireworks

Wait until fireworks are completely finished, then soak in a bucket of water. Wrap in paper or a plastic bag and put in your household rubbish. Never burn used fireworks or put them in recycling bins.

Check the weather forecast

Check the weather before lighting a bonfire or fireworks. Strong winds can blow sparks onto people, property, or dry grass, increasing the risk of fire. Only light them in a safe, open area

Sparkler Smarts

Sparklers burn at up to 2,000°C — that’s 20 times hotter than boiling water. Here's some tips on how to use them safely.

  • Always have an adult in charge.

  • Light one sparkler at a time and always supervise children.

  • For children, put the sparkler in a carrot or similar handle to make it safer to hold. Wear gloves and hold it straight out at arm’s length.

  • Never pick up or touch sparklers after they go out — they stay hot. When finished, place them in a bucket of water.

Stay legal

  • Fireworks are only allowed between 7pm–11pm.

  • Exceptions: Bonfire Night (until midnight), New Year’s Eve, Diwali & Chinese New Year (until 1am).

  • It’s illegal for under-18s to have fireworks in public.

Quick Reminders

  • The safest option? Go to a professional display.

  • Keep pets indoors — fireworks can frighten them.

  • Never throw fireworks or carry them in your pocket.

  • Only call 999 in a real emergency.

Stay safe. Celebrate responsibly.
