There’s no such thing as a typical day for a fire and rescue service. We never really know what we could be dealing with when the alert sounds. But from chemical spills to house fires; road traffic collisions to rescuing trapped animals; you can be sure we’ll do our best to get there as quickly as we can, with well trained professional staff and the best possible equipment.
It’s not just about rescues and fires. We’re just as likely to be at a school giving a lesson in fire safety; or helping the ambulance service get into a home where a patient isn’t responding to the doorbell – or, in some areas, responding to medical emergencies as community first responders.
If we’re not doing all that, we’ll be checking hydrants; giving evidence in court for an arson prosecution; compiling evidence files for breaches in fire safety law or carrying out home fire safety check visits for those who are most vulnerable or at risk; – working with our local authority and health services to share information to make sure we’re all working together to give people the best safety and wellbeing support possible.
Back at the office, we’ll be working hard to make sure our finances are sound; our fleet and equipment is properly purchased and well looked-after; that we have good health and safety systems and that we communicate well with staff and communities.
It’s pretty non-stop…but it goes a long way to keeping Lancashire safer not just from fire but a whole host of problems… and that’s what your council tax pays for!
Our longer–term ambitions are described in our Integrated Risk Management Plan and every year we produce an Annual Service Plan which sets out what projects we will be working on in the year.
