At 14:30 on the 31st May 2025, eight fire engines, the drone unit and two aerial ladder platforms are in attendance at a derelict building fire on Todmodern Road/Holmes Street, Burnley.
Firefighters are currently using two hose reel jets, ground mointors and the aerial ladder platform to extinguish the fire.
Please avoid the area. If you can see or smell smoke, please keep your windows and doors closed.
Incident update at 21:00: This incident has been reduced to six fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms and firefighting operations still underway. Our crews and partner agencies will have an attendance throughout tonight and be likely on scene throughout tomorrow to firstly extinguish the fire, undertake an investigation and to minimise the impact to the local community and surrounding areas.

Update 09:00 on 01/06/25: This incident has been reduced to four fire engines and two aerial ladder overnight. Firefighting operations will continue throughout the day with Oxford Road/Holmes Street will remain closed for vehicle access throughout today. Update at 18:00 on 01/06/25: This incident has been reduced to three fire engines and one aerial ladder platform overnight. Our crews and partner agencies will have an attendance throughout the night and tomorrow to extinguish the fire and ensure no hot spots remain. We would like to thank to the local community for their ongoing support and understanding during this time.
Update at 16:15 on 02/06/25: Crews are still at the scene and will remain present overnight tonight, with two fire engines and an aerial ladder platform in use. Our crews are working closely with partner agencies to manage the situation as safely and swiftly as possible.
Some road closures are still in place and likely to remain for the time being. This includes Holmes Street, as well as a partial closure of Oxford Road. We are asking people to continue to avoid the area where possible and keep their windows and doors shut if they can see or smell smoke.
Update on 04/06/25: Crews remain in attendance with one fire engine and one aerial ladder platform. Firefighters are continuing to fight the fire and keep it under control.
Update at 13:00 on 06/06/25: We can confirm that the fire on Holmes Street in Burnley is now extinguished.
Public safety remains our top priority, and as the building is in a structurally unsafe condition, we continue to ask local residents to stay away from the area.
One fire engine and an aerial ladder platform are still on scene, though we’re hoping to scale this back later today.
