9/11 Memorial Climb

In September 2026, firefighters from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service will travel to Atlanta, Georgia, USA, to take part in a landmark memorial event marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

WM Sam Davies, FF John Burns, FF Jamie Oldfield and WM Sam Matthews will represent Lancashire as part of an international memorial stair climb, honouring the 343 first responders who lost their lives in New York on 11 September 2001. The challenge involves ascending 110 flights of stairs - equivalent to the height of the World Trade Centre - while wearing full fire kit, replicating the conditions faced by firefighters on that day.

The Lancashire team will join a wider group of 343 participants travelling from the UK and beyond. Each individual will symbolically represent one of the fallen firefighters during the climb, ensuring that their legacy, service and sacrifice continue to be remembered.

The team is currently fundraising to cover the essential costs of attending the event and proudly representing both Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the UK fire and rescue service. Any additional funds raised will be donated to Fire Fighters Charity, Terry Farrell Foundation, and Blue Light Card Foundation.
