Firefighter Mark Fletcher represents Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service at VE Day 80th anniversary service

Firefighter Mark Fletcher (W30 Blue Watch) proudly represented Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service at a special VE Day 80th anniversary service held at Blackburn Cathedral last week.

The event marked the end of a week-long programme of commemorative activities across Lancashire and was organised by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Amanda Parker JP. Before the service, cadets from the Army, Sea, Marine, Air and Police corps paraded through Blackburn alongside members of the Royal British Legion, currently serving Armed Forces personnel, and the Band of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and the Band of the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers.

Inside the packed cathedral, guests experienced a moving service that followed the timeline of the Second World War, featuring period music and songs performed by the cathedral choir and military bands. Among those in attendance were surviving WWII veterans, who received a standing ovation as they left the service.

Mark, who is originally from Blackburn and a veteran himself, took part after responding to a call-out from the LFRS Armed Forces Veterans Working Group.

He said:

“It was an honour to represent LFRS at the VE80 parade and service at Blackburn Cathedral today. A special moment meeting two gentlemen who served in WWII, and to hear the stirring performances by the Band of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and the Band of the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers.”
