Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service urges businesses to prioritise fire safety

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is launching it’s Business Safety campaign that will run throughout the whole of September.

The first two weeks will focus on practical steps small businesses can take to reduce fire risk and comply with the law. This year’s activity emphasises risks in mixed‑use premises (e.g. takeaways and shops with flats above) and the importance of regular fire risk assessments.

Later in the month, the Service will take part in fire door safety week particularly in houses of multiple occupancy, flats, care homes and hotels.

The campaign will also put a strong emphasis on business continuity, urging organisations to take proactive steps in mitigating risks such as fire and flooding that could threaten their operations.

In 2024/25, the Service attended 253 accidental building fires in commercial premises, delivered 3,637 business fire safety checks and carried out 1,999 fire safety inspections.

Area Manager – Head of Prevention and Protection for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service says:

“Our Business Safety campaign is a great opportunity for us to get out into communities, speak directly with owners and managers, and help them make simple, cost‑effective changes that protect lives and livelihoods.

“The majority of workplace fires are preventable. A good fire risk assessment, maintained fire doors and escape routes, and staff training can make all the difference. Where businesses engage with us, we’ll support them; where serious risk persists, we will use our enforcement powers to keep people safe.

“In addition to helping businesses make these improvements, it’s important to remember that responsible persons have clear legal duties under the Fire Safety Order to assess and manage fire risks within their premises.”

What businesses can do today

  • Review your fire risk assessment and act on findings.

  • Keep escape routes clear; maintain fire doors so they close and latch properly.

  • Store and dispose of flammable materials safely, especially in kitchens and storage areas in mixed‑use premises.

  • Train staff on alarms, evacuation, and calling 999.
