Register your appliances to keep your home safe

Nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of UK homeowners admit they may not hear about a safety recall affecting an appliance they own. One in five (20 per cent) can’t remember whether they registered their large household appliances, and fewer than half (46 per cent) have registered all of their major white goods.

These findings come from a new OnePoll survey commissioned by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) as part of Register My Appliance Week (19–23 January 2026).

Unregistered appliances put homes and businesses at greater risk of electrical fires and other hazards caused by faulty products.

Why register your appliances?

·         Improved safety: Faults can develop over time. Registering your appliances allows manufacturers to contact you quickly if a repair or safety notice is issued.

·         Quick and simple: Most appliances can be registered without proof of purchase. Typically, all you need is the model and serial number.

Among those who hadn’t registered their appliances, a quarter (25 per cent) said it was because they believed the appliance was too old. However, many people don’t realise that older or second-hand appliances can still be registered — even without a receipt.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) advises checking the condition and history of any pre-owned appliance and always asking why a product is discounted and whether it comes with a warranty.

What about second-hand or nearly new appliances?

When buying nearly new appliances, it’s helpful to understand these common terms:

·         Out-of-box / open box: Returned or display items, often with minor cosmetic damage

·         Graded: New appliances returned due to imperfections or minor faults, repaired by the manufacturer

·         Refurbished: Faulty appliances that have been repaired, tested, and approved for resale

·         Display models: Unused items previously on display, which may have cosmetic marks or missing packaging
