With temperatures set to reach 30°C this week, many of us will be making the most of the sunshine and spending more time outdoors.
Whilst it can be a great opportunity to enjoy Lancashire’s countryside and coast, it’s important to be aware of the increased risks that can come with it.
Please stay safe around water
When the weather is warm, rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs and quarries can look inviting, but they can be extremely dangerous.
Open water can be much colder than it appears, and hidden hazards beneath the surface, including deep water, strong currents and submerged objects, can quickly put people in danger.
If you’re a parent, carer, grandparent or friend, please take a few moments to talk to young people about staying safe around water before they head out.
Encourage them to enjoy water activities in safe, supervised environments, such as organised water sports with qualified instructors and the correct equipment, or supervised swimming pools.
Help reduce the risk of wildfires
The warm, dry weather also increases the risk of fires starting outdoors. A single spark from a barbecue can quickly spread through dry vegetation and cause significant damage.
If you’re heading out and about, please leave disposable barbecues at home and pack a picnic instead.
If you’re using a barbecue or chiminea at home:
Keep it on firm, level ground away from fences, decking and garden furniture.
Keep flames small and controlled.
Have water nearby in case you need to put it out quickly.
Make sure it is fully extinguished before leaving it unattended or going to bed.
Hot ashes and coals can remain dangerous for hours, never put them straight into a bin or wheelie bin.
Please enjoy the sunshine responsibly and help us keep yourself, others and our beautiful county safe this summer.
