Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is proud to support Fire Door Safety Week, an annual campaign that raises awareness of the critical role fire doors play in saving lives and protecting property.
This year, LFRS will run its local campaign from 15 to 21 September, ahead of the national campaign taking place 22–26 September. The initiative, led by the British Woodworking Federation, aims to educate building owners, managers, and the public on how to check fire doors and why proper installation and maintenance are essential.
Fire doors are a vital part of a building’s passive fire protection system. They help contain fire and smoke, giving occupants valuable time to escape and firefighters time to respond. However, research shows that many people cannot identify a faulty fire door, and issues often go unreported.
Area Manager Matthew Hamer, Head of Prevention, Protection and Road Safety at LFRS, said:
“Fire doors save lives, but only if they are correctly installed and maintained. During Fire Door Safety Week, we want to remind everyone—whether you’re a landlord, business owner, or resident—that a simple check can make a huge difference. If you spot damage or a door that doesn’t close properly, report it immediately. Together, we can prevent tragedies and keep our communities safe.”
Throughout the week, LFRS will be contacting care homes, owners of houses of multiple occupancy and hotels to share practical advice and resources. The campaign will also highlight the legal responsibilities of building owners and managers under the Fire Safety Order.
The service will also be sharing information across our digital channels to help people carry out basic fire door checks.
A number of webinars and an e-learning package is available on the official Fire Door Safety Week website. For more fire safety advice, visit Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s website.
