Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is recruiting Operational Wholetime Firefighters, through either an apprenticeship or development route depending on previous experience. The development programme will start in October 2026 or January 2027 and candidates must be available for all weeks of the course. The exact date will be confirmed during the recruitment process.

About the Role
As an Apprentice/Developing Wholetime Firefighter, you will play a vital role in protecting and supporting the communities of Lancashire. The role is varied, demanding and highly rewarding. You will be expected to:

What We’re Looking For
We are seeking resilient, motivated individuals who demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, professionalism and a genuine commitment to public service.
Essential Requirement: You must hold a full Category B car driving licence, valid for use in the UK with no restrictions.
You must be prepared to work at any Fire Station in Lancashire and any shift system. Candidates are encouraged to develop an understanding of the role and working arrangements prior to applying for a position.
Recruitment and Selection Process
The recruitment process is rigorous and competitive. It is designed to ensure we appoint individuals who can perform consistently at the highest level.
As part of the process, you will be required to complete a series of job-related assessments, including:
· Online assessments (verbal ability, numerical ability and situational judgement)
· Practical and physical fitness assessments
· Assessments to test your ability to follow instructions and complete practical tasks
You must be available to attend all recruitment stages, which will take place between June and September 2026, specific dates will be confirmed in due course, as well as the full Recruits Course. Detailed information about each stage of the recruitment process is available here.
Apprenticeship and Training
Successful candidates will be appointed as either an Apprentice Firefighter or Developing Firefighter, those who have no previous experience will undertake the Level 3 Operational Firefighter Apprenticeship Standard, typically lasting up to 24 months.
· The initial recruits course forms the first stage of training
· If you do not already hold GCSE’s (A-C/9-4) in Maths and English, or equivalent, you will be required to achieve these as part of your development programme.
Salary and Benefits
· £30,384 during the initial recruits course and through development.
· £38,881 once competent in role.
